bareMinerals Original Foundation Broad Spectrum SPF 15

Hi everyone! I wanted to review my current foundation, the bareMinerals Original Foundation Broad Spectrum SPF 15 ($28.50, 0.28oz). I’ve been using it everyday since I bought it back in March and it’s become one of my favorite foundations. I heard so much about this product for years and after using one of my friend’s, I knew I had to purchase it.

This is a loose mineral powder foundation with a  dewy finish. Bare Escentuals claims it’s “clinically proven to promote clearer, healthier-looking skin” and since it has no “parabens, binders, fillers, or synthetic chemicals,” it makes this foundation perfect for those with sensitive skin like myself.

This foundation feels lightweight and has great coverage for an everyday foundation. A lot of my redness wasn’t captured in the before photo but this foundation is really good at covering skin discoloration/unevenness/redness. I don’t consider this a full coverage foundation though so it is a good idea to double up with concealer if you have more problematic areas. I use the shade golden-medium and although it’s a tad light for me right now, I love that I finally found a foundation with an undertone that I don’t find too pink for my yellow undertone.

I’ve mentioned this in my previous blog post but I have combination skin and in the summer, my T-zone gets even more oily. I purchased this foundation back in March when my face was drier, so this foundation looked great for about 5 hours before I thought I needed to blot my face. Now that it’s summer though, this foundation doesn’t stay on for as long and it becomes very wet looking within 2-3 hours. It doesn’t look bad, but it could use a touchup. However for the price, I still love this foundation! I only own one Bare Minerals product (this foundation) but can’t wait to try more — I’ve been eyeing a lot of their products.

I use the Real Technique’s expert face brush to apply this foundation and I love this brush (it’s cheap and super soft). It’s perfect for buffing the foundation into my skin. I tap the product onto the lid, then really swirl my brush in the lid before applying. To ensure even coverage and no patchiness,  I don’t use a heavy hand when swirling the brush onto my skin. That way, the product isn’t concentrated in one area of the face.

Is it worth it? Yes! I’ll definitely be repurchasing this foundation. I’ve been using this everyday since March and for its price, it exceeds my expectations and I have so much product left. Only downside is its lasting power on my combination skin (especially in the summer months), but perfect for the cooler months. I don’t recommend for oily skin, and for those with dry skin, this leaves your skin looking hydrated! I’ve put this on flaky, patchy areas and it didn’t make it look worse. Definitely give this foundation a try!🙂

Coconut Blueberry Muffins

Now that I’m all moved into my new house and don’t have someone cooking for me (or money to eat out for that matter), I’m always searching for easy, yummy recipes to try at home. Introducing my new favorite breakfast/snack recipe: amazing, easy, healthy coconut blueberry muffins. Omg you need to try these. I’ve been eating this everyday for breakfast (great with coffee) and as a snack whenever I need a pick me up.

My best friend’s mom actually introduced me to them and I’ve been hooked ever since. These muffins are packed with chia seeds, blueberries, coconut oil, and other greatness. White, bleached flour is really unhealthy but this recipe uses coconut flour so not only is it so much healthier, but it’s also gluten-free.

This recipe is from The Kitchen Table by Nutiva. I follow the recipe but I use less coconut oil and raw honey than suggested. I think it’s a healthier alternative and still tastes amazing. Although the recipe calls for coconut milk, I’ve just been using almond milk cause that’s what I have on hand. I’ve had both variations though and haven’t noticed that big of a difference since the coconut oil and flour gives the muffins its coconut flavor.

Also, feel free to try other berries too! I’ve put in blackberries and raspberries when I didn’t have enough blueberries. I’m not a huge fan of chocolate chips (esp. for breakfast) but that could also be a delicious alternative for chocolate fans!

There may seem like there’s a lot of batter left over for 12 muffins, but you can fill up the muffin tray all the way since the batter doesn’t rise too much. Since I live alone at the moment and am the only one eating them, I just store whatever I don’t eat and microwave when ready.

  • 1 cup coconut flour
  • ½ tsp sea salt
  • 1 tsp baking soda
  • about 1/4 cup raw honey
  • 1 cup coconut milk (or whatever milk you have)
  • 6 eggs
  • 4 tsp vanilla extract
  • 1/4 cup coconut oil (is what the recipe says, I use probably 1/6 cup)
  • ¼ cup chia seeds
  • 1 cup blueberries

Seriously try them –  you won’t regret it! :)

Home Inspiration

Ahh I feel like it was just yesterday when I was getting ready to move in to the dorms. I just moved into my first home ever a few weeks ago!! I’ll be living with three of my friends and I cannot wait to decorate my own space with them come fall. I’ve been doing nothing but pinning a ton of photos onto various interior design related boards on my Pinterest! Here are some photos for inspiration for my new home.

bedroom.jpgBedroom: I’ve been on the hunt to find the perfect rug. I’m thinking something patterned, striped, or geometric. My sheets and duvet are all-white so I want to add more color with a rug. I also want different texture for my bedding so it doesn’t look so one-dimensional. I love greenery in any space so can’t wait to fill it with plenty of plants and succulents. My room has so much wall-space so can’t wait to fill it with tons of artwork and mirrors!

Untitled-1Bathroom: Growing up with two sisters, I actually never had my own bathroom. But in this new house, I have the master so I have my own! It’s very well lit with natural lighting so I’m very happy about that.

Want: Towels, cute rug, jars, succulents.

Interior Design.jpgLiving Room wants: plenty of spaces to take ‘grammable photos (yes I said it) with my roommates. Cozy couch area. Candles. Books. Artwork. Greenery.

Office spaceWorking Space: To be honest, I have no idea what to do with this space yet. I already bought a white Ikea desk and clear chair (also from Ikea). I like the look of the third photo the most. The shelves would allow for cute bookends, storage, and photo displays.

I’ve already taken before photos so I cannot wait to share the after photos when my room is complete!🙂

College Edition: The Greatest Lesson I Learned

I created this blog about 1.5 years ago, intending to post regularly, but after about a month of having it, I slowly started posting less and less and less. I took about a six month break while I was adjusting to my first semester of college, but cutting the BS, I was just lazy.

My first semester at Chapman University was definitely eye-opening and full of great experiences. I joined a social sorority (Kappa Alpha Theta), stayed on top of all my classes, and developed incredible friendships. I’m lucky to be in Southern California and surrounded by such amazing people and talent. Having looked forward to college for the majority of high school, college definitely surpassed my standards – however, in a different way than you may think.

My first semester of college wasn’t rainbows and butterflies. The first month was perfect – all the new experiences thrown at me was so exciting. I was always going out at night, meeting cute boys, going to new places, etc. I was on a constant high. The prospect of a new start was thrilling and leaving Arizona was liberating. However, like everything else in life, once the newness started to fade, reality kicked in. Everything that once appealed to me appeared to have flaws and even the slightest mishap in my day caused me to feel so sad. It was like I was experiencing withdrawal.

The feelings I experienced was not Chapman specific though. This could’ve easily happened at any other college or in another situation with completely different circumstances. However, the lesson I learned was that I cannot depend my own happiness on external factors – a simple advice or so it seems. This advice is not a new concept for me, but it definitely is one that takes a lot of awareness and reminding.

While I started the semester off very confident and optimistic, that began to fade as the months went on. I fit in at Chapman and like(d) it but after months, I realized that what I truly wanted was different than what I had. I came to Chapman thinking there’d be more racial diversity than Scottsdale, but that was definitely not the case and frankly, I didn’t feel like there was enough passion or competition among the students. For someone who thrives from the energy around me, I felt like the lack of it was not pushing me hard enough academically.

I think another big thing that held me back in my first semester was the constant, lingering thoughts of USC over my head. I compared what life would be like there to here and I don’t think I was able to fully appreciate and absorb Chapman because of it. However because USC is my dream school to this day and I still believe that’s where I’m destined to be, I applied again. Now whether I’ll get enough financial aid (the determining factor for attendance) is up in the air, but for now, I’m applying to scholarships and living life.

As I begin my second semester, I want to go into it with the same positive attitude I had going into Chapman my first semester. I want to continue to strengthen the friendships I’ve gained with friends and professors, and meet even more people who I could connect with on a deeper level. More importantly, I want to focus more on pursuing my passions and taking care of myself.

When I say college surpassed my standards, I don’t mean it because it was perfect, but because I was able to learn so much from the (not so good) experiences in college. It allowed me to develop a greater sense of identity through lots of intellectual conversations and time soul searching. On a positive note, college is so much fun, friends are amazing, and I’m happy.

Explorin’ LA

If you’ve read my previous blog post, you’d know I’m working on being more adventurous and traveling more often. I came to Chapman University with hopes to explore Southern California, but unfortunately, I tended to stick to one familiar area of town rather than branching out. So, almost five months after starting college, I finally drove up to LA with my roommate to explore the city a few weekends ago.

5:00am: We thought it would be a good idea to beat the LA traffic by starting our day early and watching the sunrise. We got ready and got to the Hollywood Bowl Overlook at around 7 am, just in time for the sunrise. Unfortunately, although the photo looks stunning, there wasn’t really a sunrise cause it was really cloudy out (thanks VSCO for cool edits).

7:30am: Because the hollywood hike is a few minutes drive away from the overlook, we decided to hike the mountain for about 30 minutes just to say we did it! I’ve done it before so I knew what I was getting myself into, but definitely need to go back and complete it because I love hikes.

8:30am: For breakfast, we hit up Go Get Em Tiger. We both got eggs on a biscuit and coffee which was bomb. There’s limited seating inside so we sat outside, but still really enjoyed the environment.

9:30am: Since LA has some cool street art, we decided to check them out and took some great photos in front of them.

2016 Goals

Happy New Year everyone!! 2015 was awesome and I’m so excited what 2016 has in store for me. These are some goals/resolutions I want to work on this year. I may or may not continue to update this list throughout the year. Let me know what your goals for the year are🙂

  • Wake up and go to bed earlier – spend more time in the morning preparing for the day
  • Drink more water
  • Be more spontaneous and say yes more often
  • Practice more yoga and mindful meditation
  • Don’t swear so much
  • Go somewhere or try something new once a month
  • Do an international trip with my own money
  • Spend my money more wisely
  • Take more photos and document more of my life
  • Live more in the moment and loosen up
  • Don’t flake on people and respond to texts faster
  • Only make promises I can make
  • Be kinder and more patient to myself and others
  • Improve my french and feel confident enough to hold a conversation
  • Learn how to use my DSLR (esp. in manual mode)
  • Take a coding class
  • Film and produce at least one video
  • Go surfing
  • Take a new profile picture for Facebook and LinkedIn
  • Wear contacts for shorter amounts of time – my poor eyes are so bloodshot and dry by the end of the day
  • Read the news more and familiarize myself with presidential candidates so I can vote in the new year

My Experience with Eyelash Extensions

After months of considering eyelash extensions, I finally hopped on the bandwagon and got my first full set of lashes last month. Prior to getting extensions I used mink strip lashes from Velour Lashes. Although I absolutely loved the lashes and the flexibility of choosing different styles for different occasions, I wanted a more permanent option. Let’s just say I’m obsessed with extensions and my morning routine is so so quick now.

Procedure: On average, the procedure will take about 1-2 hours for a full set and 0.5-1 hour for fills (touch ups). Go into your appointment with no eye makeup on. Your technician will then have you lie down and put on a sticky tape or pad under your eye so your lower lashes won’t get in the way of the application process. Unlike false strip or individual lashes that are applied onto your lash line, lash extensions are individual lashes that are attached to the base of each of your natural lash with a glue.

Lashes come in all length, density, and curls giving you the option to customize your look. You can opt for a cat eye look with longer lashes on the end or a doe-eyed look with longer lashes in the middle. It’s entirely up to you!

My first set of eyelash extensions were C curls and classics. Classic lashes look more natural. I don’t remember exactly what thickness and length she used, but I think she said she varied between 9-13mm lashes. My second set were D curls and volume lashes. I felt like the C curls weren’t curled enough, but the Ds definitely fixed the issue. I really don’t need to wear any eye makeup with the volume lashes which is so nice. I love the look of the volume lashes but now that I’ve had both styles, I think I’ll be getting D curls, classic in the future.

Aftercare: Your technician will tell you how long you need to wait before getting your lashes wet since curing time depends on the glue that’s used. Mine takes 4 hours to cure, however, I’ve heard some take as long as 48 hours (eeeekk)! My technician gave me two spoolies (lash brushes) and told me to comb through my lashes to shape and prevent clumps when needed.

Treat your lashes with some TLC if you want them to last as long as possible! A full set will probably last 6-8 weeks, but that’s assuming it’s not going to look anywhere as good as when you just got them. It’ll probably be very sparse by that point. Fills are recommended every 2-4 weeks, however these time spans are dependent on lash aftercare and growth which will vary by individuals.

I get my lashes wet when showering and washing my face, but just be sure to comb them out after. Never pinch them, just use your spooly to comb them through. Don’t wear waterproof mascara or any oil based products — that will counteract the glue and cause breakage and/or fallout. Using mascara is not recommended, but I do it every once in a while and have no problem! Also, make sure to use an oil-free makeup remover. I’ve been a fan of Neutrogena’s blue makeup remover since I started wearing makeup; I’ve lost track of how many bottles I’ve used. Anyway, although it claims to be oil-free, it does have an oil layer in the middle which is why I use Almay’s makeup remover. I use a q-tip but word of advice, be careful when using q-tips and makeup wipes cause the lint can catch on to your lashes, easily pulling your extensions out.

Two things that are not recommended but I did: When I first got the C curls, I didn’t feel like they were curled enough so I curled mine really carefully with an eyelash curler a few times. That’s recommended against, but I didn’t have a problem with it🙂 I also wore false strip lashes about 4 times with the C curls (again because they weren’t curled enough) and with that, I experienced some lash fallout when I took them off. Now, that being said, if you feel like you need to curl your lashes or put on extra lashes, your extensions aren’t probably curled or dense enough (which is why I chose D curls the second time).

Cost and Worth: Eyelash extensions aren’t cheap!! I thought about them for months before getting them. I considered lash growth serums like Latisse since they’re around the same price and an even more permanent option, but I knew the effects weren’t going to be anywhere near as dramatic as extensions. I was conflicted because I didn’t want to feel like I was wasting money on something so expensive if I didn’t like it, but I’m so glad I got them. My suggestion to those who are considering eyelash extensions are, if you have the money and time, 100% try them out!! Now my college budget won’t be able to support this lavish beauty lifestyle for too much longer, but I will definitely be getting extensions whenever I can😉
